When a woman was sexually assaulted after a date with a fellow University of Wisconsin student, she reported the incident to police. She had no idea that other women would come forward with similar claims about the man, opening up several other cases that police continue to investigate. CNN reported that the perpetrator was arrested the day after the first victim reported the assault on October 12, 2016, but disturbing facts emerged about his behavior and he has been placed on emergency leave from the University. If the allegations are true and the facts support a conviction for sex crimes, the man could be facing prison time, hefty fines, and may be required to register as a sex offender.

Sexual Assault Charges on University Campuses

According to the first victim, the accused invited her to his apartment after dinner and a study date at the University library. She stated in an affidavit that she repeatedly told him that she didn’t want things to move too fast, and he assured her that they would only proceed as long as she was comfortable. However, once they arrived at his residence, he became more forceful and assaulted her for approximately three hours before allowing her to leave. After the victim reported the incident to police, the man was arrested on nine counts, including sexual assault, battery, strangulation, and false imprisonment.

Soon after his arrest, the man’s face appeared on the local news and social media, prompting other women to come forward with claims similar to the first victim’s. As of October 25, dozens of women had contacted police to discuss acts related to the accused.

Additional Counts Involving Four Other Women

Prosecutors in the case announced that the man would be charged with 30 sex crimes counts in addition to the ones reported by the first victim. The charges include felony sexual assault, false imprisonment, and strangulation against four other women. The police investigation reveals that some of the claims date back to March 2015, and that at least one other fact makes the case even more disturbing: The man kept a journal of his activities involving women. The notebook contained techniques investigators referred to as stalking behavior, and listed a ledger of women’s names and what he wanted to do to them.

The Accused Pleads in Court

In all, the man has been charged with 14 felonies and one misdemeanor, pleading not guilty to all of the crimes. At his initial court hearing on October 27, the judge set his bail at $200,000.
